Ipswich City Council Division 4 by-election

A by-election is being held to elect a new councillor in Division 4 of the Ipswich City Council.

Election day is Saturday 26 October 2024. This is the same day as the State general election.

Early voting will be from 8am to 6pm, Monday 14 October to Friday 25 October 2024 (excluding weekends).

For the by-election, you must vote at a polling place in Ipswich City Council or at Brisbane City Hall.

Voting is compulsory.

The timetable for the by-election is set in accordance with the Local Government Electoral Act 2011. The election period began following the publication of the notice of election.

  • Candidate nominations – Friday 27 September to 12pm on Tuesday 8 October 2024
  • Postal vote applications close – Monday 14 October 2024 at 7pm
  • Early voting – Monday 14 October to Friday 25 October 2024 (excluding weekends), 8am to 6pm
  • Election day – Saturday 26 October 2024, 8am to 6pm
  • Postal vote completion deadline – Saturday 26 October 2024 at 6pm
  • Postal vote return deadline – Tuesday 5 November 2024

Nominations close at 12pm on Tuesday 8 October 2024.

All candidates must complete the free training course So you want to be a councillor? conducted by the Department of Housing, Local Government, Planning and Public Works.

This course must be completed within 6 months of nominating which means if you already completed the course before nominating for the March local government elections, you will need to retake it and get a new certificate of completion.

The course is fully online and will take about 90 minutes to complete. After finishing the training, you will want to download your certificate of completion. The certificate contains a reference number that must be included on your nomination form.

You can vote:

  • by post
  • early (before election day)
  • on election day
  • by telephone (eligible voters only)

For the by-election, you must vote at a polling place in Ipswich City Council or at Brisbane City Hall.

Postal voting

Anyone can request a postal vote. If you have requested a postal vote for the State general election, you will automatically receive voting material for the Ipswich Division 4 by-election as well.

When you receive your ballot paper, be sure to read and follow the instructions carefully.

Postal votes must be completed by 6pm on election day, and the ECQ must receive it by Tuesday 5 November 2024 for it to be counted.


Early voting

Every voter is welcome to vote early.

Early voting is open from Monday 14 October to Friday 25 October (excluding weekends) from 8am to 6pm.

Voters must vote at an early voting centre in Ipswich City Council or at Brisbane City Hall.

Telephone voting

Eligible voters can vote by telephone. Telephone voting will be available between Monday 14 October and election day, Saturday 26 October 2024.
