Ways to vote

Voting is compulsory in Queensland. All people enrolled to vote in Queensland are required to vote in local, state and federal government elections.

Each voter can choose how they want to vote for each election. All voters are eligible to vote on election day, at an early voting centre or via postal ballot. For assistance, please see our page I need help voting.

Voting on election day

Many people choose to vote at a polling place on election day.  For a state general election, you can vote at any polling place in Queensland.

All polling place locations are listed on this website in the lead up to an election. You can use the Find My Polling Booth page to find the best location for you.

We provide information about the accessibility of each polling place to help you choose the best location.

Early voting

All voters can vote at an early voting centre before election day.

The early voting period is specified when the election is called. For state-wide elections, the early voting period is usually 2 weeks.

You will find the location and open hours of early voting centres on the Find My Polling Booth page once an election is declared.

Postal voting

Any voter can request a postal ballot for an election. If you would prefer not to go to a polling place, we can send a postal ballot to your home or where you are staying.

For more information about requesting and filling out a postal ballot, you can visit our Postal voting page.

Telephone voting

Certain voters are eligible to vote by telephone (otherwise known as ‘electronically assisted voting’). You need to contact the ECQ to register.

Our telephone voting information sheet has more information.

Declared institution voting

In some elections, the ECQ visits patients and residents of registered declared institutions such as aged care homes. Patients and residents can vote from their room or from a polling place set up in a public area. Staff and visitors cannot vote at a declared institution.

Please contact the ECQ to register a declared institution. More information can be found on our Declared institution information sheet.
