Completing mandatory training

Completing mandatory training

Before nominating, all candidates are required to have completed a free training course conducted by the Department of Local Government, Water and Volunteers.

So you want to be a councillor? will take about 90 minutes to complete. You can complete the training all at once or over several sessions. Each section is 10-15 minutes long.

The training can be completed on a computer or mobile device, but it will be easiest to complete on a computer. There are video and audio components.

For candidates who are not sitting councillors, the mandatory training must be completed within 6 months prior to nominating for the election. A certificate will be available for download after successfully completing the training. The reference number on the certificate must be included on the candidate’s nomination form as proof of completing the course.

Sitting councillors who have already completed the training course for a previous election do not need to retake training before nominating. However, they are still able to complete the course if they so choose.
