Independent report on election day 2024

Nous Group was commissioned by the Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) in November 2023 to undertake an independent external evaluation of the 2024 local government elections.

In March 2024, the scope of the evaluation was expanded to include specific focus on known election day issues, including wait times and ballot paper shortages experienced at some booths on election day.

Election day voting

Election day was Saturday, 16 March 2024 and is now closed.


Early voting

Early voting was available from 4 March to 15 March and is now closed.


Postal voting

Postal votes must have be completed by 6pm on election day, and the ECQ must receive it by Tuesday, 26 March 2024 for it to be counted.


Other ways to vote

Eligible electors may have also voted by:

  • telephone
  • mobile voting

Registrations for telephone voting were open until midday on election day, Saturday 16 March. If you had registered, you had to vote before 6pm on election day, 16 March.

Mobile voting was provided to electors in certain locations such as aged care facilities which have been designated as ‘declared institutions’.

These services are only available to eligible electors.

Nominations closed at 12 noon on Tuesday, 13 February 2024.

As nominations were accepted by the ECQ, candidate details were published progressively on the ECQ website.

The timetable for the 2024 local government elections is set in accordance with the Local Government Electoral Act 2011. The elections officially commenced following publication of the notice of election.

  • Notice of election – Monday, 29 January 2024
  • Postal vote applications – Monday, 29 January 2024 to 7pm on Monday, 4 March 2024
  • Candidate nominations – Monday, 29 January 2024 to 12 noon on Tuesday, 13 February 2024
  • Ballot paper order draw – 10am on Wednesday, 14 February 2024
  • Early voting* – Monday, 4 March to Friday, 15 March 2024 (excluding the weekend)
    *Early voting times will vary depending on location. Check early voting dates, times and locations.
  • Election day* – Saturday, 16 March 2024.
    *All polling booths will be open from 8am to 6pm. Find your nearest polling booth.
  • Postal vote completion deadline – 6pm Saturday 16 March 2024
  • Postal vote return deadline – Tuesday, 26 March 2024
