Voting on Polling Day
Queensland State elections are always held on a Saturday. This is to ensure polling day is as convenient for the electors as possible. There are over 1700 polling booths throughout Queensland opened from 8.00am to 6.00pm on polling day for electors to cast their votes.
Where to Vote on Polling Day
Elector’s will receive a Voter Information Letter prior to polling day detailing their enrolment details and enrolled electoral district. The letter also contains a list of polling booths in the elector’s enrolled district that they can visit to cast their vote.
You can bring your perforated card from your letter along with you on polling day to assist the polling official in issuing you with your vote.
Electors who are unable to make it to a polling booth in their electoral district may visit any other polling booth in Queensland and cast an Absent Vote.
A complete list of all polling booths throughout Queensland will be available on this website at election time.

How to Cast your Vote
When you go to vote the issuing officer will hand you a ballot paper for you to complete and place in the ballot box provided. Voting instructions are provided on each ballot paper. Electors can cast a valid vote in three ways.
1. An elector can vote by expressing a single primary preference for one candidate only (marking only one square with the number 1, a tick, or a cross, leaving all the others blank).
2. An elector can vote by expressing a partial distribution of preferences by voting for some, but not all candidates on the ballot paper (marking some but not all squares, such as 1, 2, and 3 on a ballot paper with 5 candidates).
3. An elector can vote by expressing a full distribution of preferences (marking each and every square of the ballot paper in order of preference, such as 1, 2, 3, and so on).
Further information on ballot papers and casting your vote can be found in the Electoral Act 1992.
