Temporarily absent from Australia
If you are going overseas for less than one year, and may be unable to vote whilst you are away you will need to notify us by submitting an Overseas Notification Form to avoid any penalties for not voting.

Going overseas for more than a year
If you are going overseas for more than one year but less than six years you can choose to either remain on the electoral roll or ask to be removed from the electoral roll in your absence. If you remain on the electoral roll you may still vote, however you will not be fined if you do not vote. If you are removed from the electoral roll you may re enrol once you return to Australia and have lived at your residence for one month.

Registering as an Overseas Elector
You may register as an Overseas Elector before you leave Australia or within three years after you have left. Your registration is for six years from the day of your departure. To register as an overseas elector you are required to complete and submit the form below. This will retain your name on the electoral roll and you can also choose to be registered to receive an automatic postal vote at election time.

Going overseas permanently or indefinitely
If you are going overseas permanently or indefinitely and are currently enrolled, you are not eligible to remain enrolled. You must complete and submit an Overseas Notification Form requesting to be removed from the electoral roll. You will then not be penalised for not voting whilst you are absent. You may re enrol if you decide to return to Australia and have lived at your residence for one month.

Enrolling from overseas
If you are not currently enrolled and have been overseas for more than three years, you are not eligible to enrol from outside Australia. You can re enrol once you return to Australia and have lived at your residence for one month.

Voting from overseas
If you are enrolled you are eligible to vote from overseas. You can apply to receive a postal vote at election time if you are not already registered to automatically receive one, or you can vote at any of the pre-poll voting centres located overseas. Details of these offices and postal vote application forms will be available on the website once the election has been announced. If you are unable to vote at election time please contact us.
