Registration for the Kidz Election activity for the 2012 State election has now closed.
The Electoral Commission of Queensland is committed to educating Youth in Queensland Electoral Processes and Voting and their rights and responsibilities as future voters. The Commission undertakes a number of educational activities that are designed to inform young people about voting and elections within our democratic system of government.
The Kidz election conducted in 2009 in conjunction with the State Election is an example of one such educational activity.
State Election 2012
Polling day for the State Election in 2012 has been announced as Saturday 24 March 2012. The Electoral Commission Queensland will be conducting a KIDZ ELECTION in the election period leading up to polling day similar to the pilot program that was trialled by the Commission with positive results in 2009.
As the program is still in a pilot stage of development and due to logistical considerations limitations have been placed on the catchment areas for participating schools. The Commission hopes to expand the program at future elections.
Purpose
The aim of the Kidz election is to provide students at participating schools with an authentic voting experience during the period of the State Election.
The concept being that students of participating schools would get to vote for the actual candidates endorsed in the electoral district in which the school is located.
The student target groups for the Kidz Election program is as follows:
Primary schools - Years 6 & 7, Secondary schools - Years 8 & 9

The Kidz election serves a dual purpose. Firstly to introduce students to the electoral process to acquire knowledge and an understanding of the State electoral system with an emphasis on voting processes. Secondly for students to participate in an authentic voting activity in a school environment using the Optional Preferential Voting (OPV) system used at State elections (refer to the factsheets). |
